FILMS
STATEMENT
A diptych titled B&W: Not Black, Not White is a part of my ongoing
project FILMS (since 2004). It involves a process of drawing from
movies, films of all kinds, which I typically view as DVD's.
With each film the task is to reduce a time-based experience, a long
sequence of images, to a panel or two of incidents, translated into
lines/shapes. The shapes drawn are those notated by my eye-site on
a TV screen, and the moment of drawing them exists simultaneously
with the moment of looking at them. There is no thought of
expressionism. I do not attempt to recover the 'essence' of the film,
merely its presence in my domestic space. A configuration of drawn
shapes on panels' surfaces comes from the countless number of
gazes at the TV screen, translated and materialized, into the
substance which builds up the line.

B&W: Not Black, Not White diptych consists of 18 panels. The panels were drawn while watching following films:
B&W - Not Black (Left) 1 "Sideways by Alexander Payne 2", 2005 2 "The Other Side of Heaven by Mitch Davis", 2006 3 "What I Have Written by John Hughes", 2006 4 "The Manchurian Candidate by Jonathan Damme 2", 2005 5 "The Black Dahlia by Brian De Palma 2 (Subtitles), 2007 6 "The Big White by Mark Mylod", 2007 7 "Swimming Pool by Francois Ozon 1", 2005 8 "Molokai by Paul Cox", 2005 9 "Hurly Burly by Anthony Drazan", 2005
|
B&W - Not White (Right) 10 "Klepto by Thomas Frail", 2005 11 "Sideways by Alexander Payne 1", 2005 12 "In America by Tim Sheridan", 2004 13 "The Departed by Martin Scorcese", 2007 14 "The Man Who Wasn't There by Joel Coen", 2004 15 "Moonlight Mile by Brian Silberling", 2006 16 "The Black Dahlia by Brian De Palma 1 (Subtitles), 2007 17 "Blood Diamond by Edward Zwick 2 (Subtitles)", 2007 18 "City of God by Fernando Meirelles 2", 2005
